We all love them but what is the history of Scones?

As with most things from hundreds of years ago there are little definitives, that said Scones are believed to have originated in Scotland in the early 1500s, in fact first reference to Scones was made by a Scottish poet in 1513.

Back then Scones were made using oats, shaped into a large round and scored into four or six wedges. They were then griddle baked over an open fire, although today’s versions are made with flour and baked in the oven.

The word is thought to have originated from the Dutch “schoonbrot,” meaning fine white bread; and the closely-related German “sconbrot,” which means fine or beautiful bread.

In England the popularity of Scones rose in the 18th century when the Duchess of Bedford began what was later to develop into Afternoon Tea when she and her friends would enjoy them with finger sandwiches and pastries, they would go onto add currants or raisins to their recipe.

Scones have come a long way and demonstrated their appeal by lasting over 500 years!
